Situated in the city of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and one of the city’s main landmarks, it was completed in 1996 by the design of world-famous Oscar Niemeyer. The MAC-Niterói is about 60 feet high; its cupola has a diameter of 164 feet with includes three floors. The museum projects itself over Boa Viagem (“Bon Voyage,” “Good Journey”), the almost 9,000 square foot reflecting pool that surrounds the cylindrical base.  Fabulous views of the famous beach areas of Rio.

Museum of Modern Art (Museu de Arte Moderna Rio de Janeiro)

The Museum was founded in 1948 by a group of art enthusiasts leaded by Raimundo Castro Maia. Ten years later, in 1958, it was transferred to its current location in the Flamengo Park.

Nowadays the Museum of Modern Art’s collection has over 11,000 pieces of both Brazilian and foreign artists, and it is considered one of the country’s most important representation of the XX century’s art. This collection shows an impressive process that starts in Cubism and goes through Futurism, Surrealism, Dadaism and other historic vanguard styles.

After visiting the MAM during your trip to Rio, it is advisable to take a leisurely walk around the Flamengo Park enjoying its lovely landscape.

Directions: Take the BUS 014 CASTELO close to BAR DO GOMES OR from Largo dos Guimarães (in front of the cinema) take the BUSES 006 or 014 and get off at the CARIOCA METRO STATION. From Avenida Chile, turn right on Avenida Rio Branco and turn left on AVENIDA BEIRA MAR (two blocks after Cinelândia). Across the footbridge in front of Avenida Calógeras.

Take a TAXI. It takes you about 10 minutes. (Approximately R$10-15)


National Museum of Fine Arts (Museu Nacional de Belas Artes)

The museum, officially established in 1937 by the initiative of education minister Gustavo Capanema, was inaugurated in 1938, by president Getulio Vargas. The museum collection, on the other hand, takes its rise in the transfer  of the Portuguese Court to Brazil in the early 19th century, when King john VI brought along with him part of the Portuguese Royal Collection.

The Museu Nacional de Belas Artes is one of the most important cultural institutions of the country, as well as the most important museum of Brazilian art, particularly rich in 19th century paintings ans sculptures.
