The Hippie Fair in Ipanema
The official name is Feira de Artezanato de Ipanema (Handcrafts & Art Fair of Ipanema), but everybody still uses the original name, a reminiscence of the 70´s. Typical foods, handmade art, Brazilian musical instruments, and many more attractions are found at this weekly event. It is the perfect place to find a souvenir with local colors. Or just walk around leisurely and enjoy. Typically higher quality items can be found here than at a typical street fair. Make sure to sample food from the Bahia food stall selling all kinds of typical dishes. Try the appetizing frigideira de bacalhau(R$ 7) – a kind of codfish omelette – or acarajé (R$ 6) (approach with care if you’re not used to dendê oil). Sweets at the fair include coconut candy (cocada) or a cake by the slice (R$ 2,50).
The hippie fair takes place at Praça General Osório, a square between Rua Prudente de Morais and Rua Visconde de Pirajá, the first and second streets parallel with beachfront Vieira Souto.

One of the best things to do every first Saturday of the month in Rio de Janeiro is the antiques fair on Rua do Lavradio, Lapa. Officially called Feira do Rio Antigo, or “Old Rio Fair”, the open-air market receives from 15,000 to 20,000 visitors every month.Though some of the best items for sale on Rua do Lavradio are pricey – and not easy to bring back home – such as wonderful early 20th century cristaleiras, or china cabinets – a bit of perusing is likely to yield some cheaper finds. A good thing about the fair is that it lasts almost all day, which gives you time to get up late and catch some action in the afternoon. For the market is not only about shopping – there’s always live music in the street, especially choro and samba, sometimes drama and dance, usually in the afternoon.
