Queens of the Drum Vie to be Carnival Champions

Carnival 2019 will feature 14 ‘Rainhas des Baterias’ (Queens of the Drum), the majestically adorned female dancers who tend to standout as the figurehead of their respective samba school’s parade. Today’s featured article introduces us to a few of the Rainhas taking part in this year’s event, including Flávia Lyra who will represent samba school Imperatriz Leopoldinense and serves as a captain of the fire department for the state of Rio de Janeiro:

Favela Brass Off to a Great Start in 2019

Favela Brass, an organization founded in 2014 by English expatriate Tom Ashe to provide free music lessons to Rio children, is already off to a great start in 2019. Ashe has established a permanent base for the organization inside the favela community of Pereira da Silva and the charity has secured its first performance outside of Rio. Marielle Franco to be Honored at Carnival

Samba schools are beginning to share details of their theme for Carnival.  Samba school, ‘Estação Primeiro de Mangueira’ (First Station of Mangueira) will use their performance to pay tribute to late Rio councilwoman, Marielle Franco, whose murder remains unsolved.  Read on for more:
